Glass has nothing to hide |
|
The non-toxicity of glass for human beings, its longer shelf-life and its exceptional taste preservation properties are all major qualities of glass that are not measured in the LCA but are however crucial elements to be taken into account when choosing an appropriate packaging material. The inert quality of glass makes it the safest packaging material in terms of protecting against potential migration of toxic substances into food and drinks. Contrary to other packaging materials, no additional plastic lining (whose composition is unknown) is needed between the food or beverage contents and the packaging to avoid corrosion or migration. Glass has no added lining and it has nothing to hide.
Toxic substances are of major concern, not only for their implications linked to contact (and further leaching) with food but also, to a broader extent, during the disposal phase: past and recent studies indicate the deleterious effects of toxic chemicals which leach..
What the legislation says? EU and international compliance legislation testifying to the inertness and safety of glass.
What the Scientists say? Glass packaging protects consumer health and safety – selection of scientific research.
