More than 70% of glass bottles and jars collected for recycling in the EU
Brussels, 26 March 2013 According to the latest glass recycling industry data – published today by the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE) – the average glass recycling rate in the European Union has risen above the 70% threshold for the first time. This means that over 11 million tons were collected throughout the European Union in 2011.
This achievement follows major efforts made in all EU Member States over the past few years to meet the EU’s 60% recycling target for glass, a level that was reached by all the relevant countries by 2008. Some of them recorded particularly outstanding results. Other countries are in good shape to meet the target within the later fixed deadlines, while for some there is still potential to improve. Brussels: 25 June 2012 Glass packaging production volumes in Europe grew by 4.2% in 2011 according to data published today by the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE). The growth confirms the increase recorded in the first half of 2011 (4.7%), and builds on a positive trend after the 2009 financial crisis. Production figures areback to 2006 levels. The total production volume in Europe was 21.7 million tonnes as against 20.8 million tonnes in 2010. Considering market diversification as well as major progress made in light weighting, it is conservatively estimated that more than 50 billion units were produced by about 160 plants in Europe for domestic and international markets.[PDF] Read more...

That means about 25 billion glass bottles and jars were collected throughout the European Union in 2010.
Glass recycling and separate waste collection: key drivers towards a circular economy

A report published today by the Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling and Sustainable Resource Management (ACR+) for the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE) says separated waste collection schemes should be widely supported if we are to build a circular economy for glass packaging. It stated that Europe needs to use its resources much more sparingly by recycling more, meaning we need higher collection rates and higher quality of collected glass. The report concludes that only glass bottles and jars collected separately will result in both a higher quantity and quality of post consumer glass (cullet) availability that can save resources to make new packaging.

Production data 2010 published today from the European Container Glass Federation show a general recovery from the drop of the previous year. In 2010, the industry produced 20.7 million tonnes of glass compared to 20.1 million tonnes in 2009 marking an increase of 3.5%.
A Europe-wide survey released today by the independent research consultancy InSites shows that glass is consumers’ preferred packaging material for food and drinks by three quarters of European consumers. The top three key reasons were: glass packaging preserves the taste of its contents; it is considered healthy and safe; and is environmentally friendly.
EU recommends glass as ban on plastic baby bottles enforced

The European Container Glass Federation (FEVE) welcomes the recommendation from the European Commission for parents to use glass baby bottles.
The recommendation features in the new rules to outlaw the use of polycarbonate baby bottles containing Bisphenol A (BPA); the EC Directive comes into force on March 1st.
Closed-loop recycling means a material can be reused over and over again in a closed loop system - like for glass bottles. This is key to a resource efficient Europe.

Over 100 European policy makers, members of the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE), consumers and other stakeholders attended on Wednesday night, 9 February 2011, the first ever water-tasting event in the European Parliament. The event, entitled ‘Discover the Natural Mineral Waters of Europe’, was hosted by Rovana Plumb, Filip Kaczmarek and Theodoros Skylakakis, Members of the European Parliament. Andreas Larsson, Best Sommelier of the World 2007, invited the guests to experience the diversity and differences in taste of the mineral waters.

Speaking at the conference was European FEVE president, Niall Wall, Kathleen van Brempt from the European Parliament and FEVE Technical Director, Fabrice Rivet.
